Meet Our Founder
Richard Carranza
Richard A. Carranza is a nationally respected educational leader known for championing equity, inclusion, and student-centered leadership across some of the most complex and diverse school systems in the United States. As a system leader, Carranza brings a bold vision,
a deep understanding of instructional leadership, and a personal commitment to dismantling systemic
inequities that prevent students—especially those from historically marginalized communities—from reaching
their full potential.
Carranza stands unapologetically for racial, linguistic, and socio-economic equity. He believes schools must confront and correct the structural barriers that deny opportunity to Black, Latino, Indigenous, immigrant, and low-income students. He led efforts to implement culturally responsive curricula, expand access to advanced coursework, and address disproportionalities in discipline and special education.
He views teaching and learning as the core business of schools and holds leaders accountable for creating environments where rigorous instruction, high expectations, and student voice are non-negotiables. Carranza emphasizes the need for coherent systems of professional development and aligned instructional strategies across districts.
As a fluent Spanish speaker and former English learner, Carranza is a passionate supporter of bilingualism, dual-language programs, and affirming the cultural identities of multilingual students. He has expanded opportunities for students to learn in multiple languages and elevated the importance of language access for families.
Throughout his career—including as Chancellor of New York City schools—Carranza has made principled, often politically challenging decisions rooted in what he believes is right for students. He has spoken openly about the need to address white supremacy culture in schools and has pushed back against policies that reinforce inequity, even at personal or political cost.
While deeply collaborative in his leadership style—engaging teachers, families, and community leaders—Carranza does not shy away from courageous conversations and actions. He believes in building systems that reflect the values of justice, transparency, and shared responsibility.
